Troubleshooting the Lift Brake

If the break is not engaging, the first thing you want to make sure is that the wheel/motor is turning clockwise as it's going up. If it isn't then the cable has been wound up backwards and the brake will never engage. The fix is to lower the lift all the way down (clockwise) until it re-wraps onto the spool and starts to raise again.

If winch/motor are turning clockwise as you raise the boat and the brake is not working then it will just need a little maintenance. Most likely the wheel is stuck on the shaft and is not engaging the brake system. To repair, lower the lift so there's no weight on the cable. Next you want to remove the wheel. Take the bolt in the center of the wheel out and be careful to not drop any parts into the water. The wheel will un-thread counter clockwise, you need to keep the inside of the winch from turning so you can break the wheel from its stuck position. Once the wheel is removed, clean the threads on the winch drive shaft and the threads inside the wheel with a wire brush. This will remove the corrosion allowing the wheel to thread all the way onto the driveshaft and engaging the brake system. You can apply a little grease onto the driveshaft (you don't want to get any grease on the brake pads) and spin the wheel back on. Install the wheel kit (spacer, washers, center bolt) and make sure there's an 1/8" gap between the wheel plate and washer on the wheel kit. This should take care of the problem.
